Welcome to the Danish Lutheran Church of Vancouver, B.C.

Pastor Susanne Everybody’s welcome at The Danish Lutheran Church in Burnaby.

Most Danes and Scandinavians in B.C. speak English and so do we, so if your ancestors came here a long time ago and you cannot remember the language, or if you do not have Danish roots at all, don’t worry! All info here on our website is in both English and Danish. We are proud of our Danish heritage and Scandinavian roots and want to share all this with you.

The Danish Church started out as an immigrant church in the 1920s. We still speak Danish at some of our services and functions, but as many of our members are Canadian raised, most functions are now in English. We don’t get any funding or money from Denmark! All wages and expenses are paid by donations, which means that we are depending on your generosity, especially these days when we cannot host any fundraising events.

The church in Burnaby is built in the 80’s and is located on the ancestral and unceded homelands of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples. Our closest neighbours are Dania Home, Dania Manor and Carl Mortensen Manor and we celebrate services and get together both at the care homes and in the church. Another close neighbor is the Scandinavian Centre, lots of Danish activities like language lessons, Midsummer Festival, celebration of Danish Constitution Day etc. take place at the centre.

These years a lot of Danes are working in Canada on a contract or they come here for a variety of reasons to stay only for a few years; please do not hesitate to visit our church during your stay and we will welcome you in our congregation. Let us know if you need help getting settled or if you feel homesick.

You can celebrate Fastelavn with your kids here, you can celebrate your love and get married and baptize your children. We officiate funerals and can assist you in challenging situations or pay you a visit in the hospital, or you can just come by on a Sunday for breakfast and the service.

It’s been a hot summer with smoke, closed borders and other challenges for everyone. But it’s also been a summer of new beginnings! The Danish Church has reopened, and we are almost back to normal, celebrating lots of baptisms and people can now finally invite more friends to join them at memorials and bring their neighbours to Sunday service. In Danish we say: Kirken er bygget af levende stene! Our church is not just the building, it’s all of us working and celebrating together – because most days you’ll find that God’s hands are to be found at the end of your own arms.

So, join us this Fall for Thanksgiving or Bazaar, for meetings or an afternoon of fun & games. Bring your neighbor or your grandchildren, sign up for Lucia and simply just enjoy that we are able to get together again! See updates and read more about our history here on this website or follow us on Instagram or Facebook.

Looking forward to seeing you all! God bless,

Pastor Susanne
